Since your reading this article, you must be browsing the web, yet you still haven't heard of digital cameras. Apart from the computer itself, and perhaps the cell phone, photography has been more revitalized than practically any other industry in the digital universe. During it's early introduction, it was reviled by professional photographers, as being a sub par and mediocre technology. In other words, the picture quality was pathetic. However, Like any high tech toy these days, it has matured at an alarming rate, and the cries of mediocrity have been gagged and silenced. Everyone, even a multitude of pros engage in the sinful passion that is digital photography.Digital Delights vs Digital DystopiaNot to say that aren't a cornucopia of complications to overcome in this new digital wonderland. And hardly the least of these is the managing of the overflow of new pictures you now own copyrights to. It seems that being cheap little buggers, is a genetic trait of most human beings. Way back in the old days, when taking pictures actually meant buying real film with real cash, we were very judicious in what pictures we took. Now that digital photography allows us to endlessly reuse those overworked little bits on our memory sticks, we click, snap and shoot every cute, furry, adorable thing that comes into range. Once are hard drives are crammed with a gazillion of these images ranging from dubious to heirloom quality we really start to worry. What happens if our hard drive makes that klunk-grind-klunk-kratch sound that next time we boot up our pc? Or . . . however will we find that one really priceless picture we're looking for, in that wasteland of hopefully-forgotten digital visions? Gotta have backups folks. And really you must get more organized. It's that simple. And hey, while your at it, dump that crappy and boring old screen saver of flying toasters, and crappy windows logos, for your own maniacal barge sized load of digital pictures on your hard drive. Why not at least view your images on your own pc periodically before your hard drive commits digital Hari-Kari.Revenge is the Ultimate PanaceaOf course there are many more creatively satisfying tactics for dealing with all this digital photography abundance. All those free picture sharing sites that allow us to inflict our photographic genius on other unsuspecting travelers of the net. You upload your pictures in varying sizes, and mediums of presentation. Yes, the already tortured world really needs to see a slideshow of my 4 year olds magnificently produced, directed and choreographed version of the Teddy Bear Picnic. As harmless as this strategy may seem, it's effectiveness is not ruthlessly devoid of passion. Of course why just settle for a inner feeling of joy, when you can turn all those pictures into hard cash. Start a picture blog, and surround your beautiful works of sublime art with greed driven capitalistic advertisements. Nothing like that oh so moving picture of junior playing with his very first barf, and a caption of "Ads by Gaaaaaaagle" eloquently underneath. I'm sure once you put a little thought into it, you can come up with your own wonderful form of digital dysentery. Best of luck, I'll be watching for you.

I used to have a bad habit. It is known as the '5 minutes desire'. What is the '5 minutes desire'? Well, it just an analogy to mean that I was only excited about a new thing for a very short while. Like a child with a very short attention time span, I will loss interest in whatever I love to do after 5 minutes despite the fact that I was very crazy about it before that.For example, if I were excited about a new computer game, then I would buy and play the computer game continuously. But after a short period of a few days, I would loss interest in that game. Then another new game caught my attention and the whole cycle would repeat again. This '5 minutes desire' is not just applicable to computer game. It can be applied to anything. For example, if I were passionate about photography, I would spend lot of money buying expensive SLR digital camera and lens. After playing with it for a while, I would loss interest. The '5 minutes desire' teach me one important thing. If I just invest my effort for a very short intense burst, I will not get any result or progress.For example, if I want to reach the goal of completing 2.4 km run within 15 min. My objective is to achieve the goal within 3 months of training. If I were to trained everyday for the first 3 days. After that, I trained only once in a while due to lost of interest. At the end of 3 months, I definitely will not make any progress.However, if I were to train consistently like once a week, I would make progress but at a very slow rate. But if I had committed myself to train once every 2 days, I would definitely make significant progress.Similarly, if you are serious about photography, you should be consistent in learning and practicing. You can practice once a week or twice a week depending on your schedule. As long as you learn and practice consistently, you will definitely improve. The frequency will determine the rate of progress. If you learn and practice more consistently, you will progress faster. If you learn and practice less frequently, you will simply progress slower. If you are inconsistent in your learning and practicing, then do not expect progress.In short, the simple idea that I will like to share with you is:Consistent Efforts will ensure progress!

Piano Chords: How Many Are There?

An interesting experiment is to ask people how many chords there are in music. You'll be surprised to find out that most musicians don't do any better at answering that question than non-musicians.Why do you suppose is that?It is probably because it sounds like one of those questions such as "How many grains of sand on the seashore are there?", or "How many stars are there in the sky?"And in a sense it is, but in another sense, we can get a fairly accurate sense of chord population just by calculating all the chord types and then multiplying them by the number of inversions that are possible and the number of octaves that are possible on any given instrument.So let's start with a listing of chord types:MajorMinorDiminishedAugmentedDiminished 7thMajor 6thMinor 6thMajor 7thMinor 7thHalf-diminished 7th9thFlat 9thSharp 9th11thSharp 11thSuspension13thSus 7thAug 7th9th/Major 7th6th/9thAdd 2ndAdd 4thFlat 5th7th with flat 5thThat's 25 of the most-used types. There are several other variations, but these chord types will do nicely for our purposes of estimating the total number of chords.Each chord can be inverted -- turned upside down -- by the number of notes in the chord. For example, a 3 note chord has 3 positions -- root position, first inversion, and second inversion. A 4 note chord has 4 positions, a five note chord has 5 positions, and so on.We will say for arguments sake that 4 positions is the average, knowing that some chords have more and some have less. So if we multiply 25 chord types by 4 positions, that gives us 100 possible chords per octave.Some instruments only have the range to play 2 or 3 octaves, whereas a piano with its 88 keys can play 7 octaves -- 100 chords in the lowest octave, 100 chords in the next octave, 100 chords in the next octave, and so on up to the top octave of the keyboard.So on the piano we could theoretically play those 100 chords in all 7 octaves, giving us 700 possible chords. Of course, some would sound so low or so high that they wouldn't really be useable in a song. But still, they are possible.So what's the answer to the original question? It depends upon the instrument and how many variations of each chord the individual musician uses.

The Blues Scale & Cool Stuff You Can Do With It

Most of us who took piano lessons as kids are all too familiar with scales, and most of us hated practicing them with a passion. But understanding scales and what they do is critical to the process of improvisation as well as key orientation and just a general understanding of what's happening in the song we are playing.The word "scale" comes from the Latin word "la scala" which means "the ladder". So a scale is a ladder of notes that starts at the bottom -- called the root note -- and proceeds upwards to the top of the ladder -- called the octave note.There are several kinds of scales, the most common being the major scale, followed by three different types of minor scales. After that there are several specialty scales, including the blues scale used widely in jazz, R&B, blues, and quite a bit in pop music.The "blues scale" is really a combination of the major diatonic scale (the "regular" scale we all grew up with) plus three additional notes:The flatted 3rd;The flatted 5th (or sharp 4th -- same thing);The flatted 7thAs a result the blues scale really contains 11 notes -- the 8 of the normal diatonic scale -- and the 3 "blue notes". These are used in various combinations, as we shall see, to create a "bluesy sound".The blues started not as a piano style, but as a vocal style, and of course the human voice can sing "in the cracks" between the notes on the keyboard. So when we play blues on the keyboard, we try to imitate the human voice by playing BOTH the 3rd and the flat 3rd -- BOTH the 5th and the flat 5th -- BOTH the 7th and the flat 7th. We would play in the cracks if we could, but we can't, so we do the best we can by combining the intervals to imitate the quarter steps that a human voice can sing. (Certain instruments can do that too -- for example, the trombone. Since it has a slide, it can hit an infinite number of tones between any two keyboard notes.)So in the key of C, for example, the blues scale would include:C, D, Eb, E, F, Gb, G, A, Bb, B, and the octave C.In the key of F the blues scale would include:F, G, Ab, A, Bb, Cb, C, D, Eb, E, and the octave F.In the key of G the blues scale would include:G, A, Bb, B, C, Db, D, E, F, F#, and the octave G.So in improvising you can craft a melody out of any or all of these notes. Start by creating a motif out of just 3 or 4 notes, then repeat that motif as you change chords. For example, if you were in the Key of C, you might create a motif such as C, C, G, Bb C and repeat it in various rhythms as you play the C7 chord in your left hand, then again as you move to the F7 chord, and so on.With practice and experimentation you can play your own variety of the blues as you master the blues scale.

A First For West End Theatre

Never before has a show attracted so much media hype as The Sound Of Music, coupled with the TV show How do you solve a problem like Maria? that searched for the leading role of Maria Rainer. A role so loving portrayed by Julie Andrews in the equivalent 1960s film. This has to be the most memorable selection of songs that a musical has ever produced and Christmas would just not be quiet the same without a visit down memory lane to this timeless classic. So imagine my delight when flicking channels I came across a TV show devoted to finding Maria!Connie Fisher in her first leading role, her powerful but delicate voice is perfectly suited to this new Andrew Lloyd Webber adaptation of the Sound of Music. What a good job the British public did in voting for Connie she is ever inch the Maria we all know and love with her own unforgettable voice. She is not the only reason to make your way to the West end to watch this timeless classic along side her is Lesley Garrett as Mother Abbess and Alexander Hanson who is an experienced and talented actor and singer playing the role of Captain Von Trapp. Hanson in his own right has attracted roles in some of the cornerstone productions of the London Theatre scene such as Aspects of Love and a personal favourite of mine Sunset Boulevard.For all those who watched the performance of those adorable children accompanied by Connie during the Royal Variety production just before Christmas, was not enough to dig out your credit card and plan that weekend treat whilst humming that sweet Do-Re-Mi tune endlessly in your head. Then maybe it should be the fact that Andrew Lloyd Webber has achieved a life long ambition to reproduce this amazing true story of the Von Trapp family. Mixing renowned Choreographer Arlene Philips and Director Jeremy Sams together with the original music score from Rodgers and Hammerstine.This production can only be enhanced by it being shown at The London Palladium, this being probably the most famous of all London West End Theatres. I guess that time will only tell if this new production stands the test of time and if Connie will live in the hearts of all those theatre goers, in the same way that Julie Andrews has for the past 30 years.As well as the Sound of Music there are numerous other musicals that performed daily in London and in particular the West End.

The person will have to practice often to get the hang of things to make this hobby into an art form. Can You Still Find A Gem In The LA Music Scene?

At the Whisky a Go Go, Saturday, January 6, 2007, the opening band was Vekstar (Can hear them on my space if you are intereseted.) Some nice tunes on My Space, but the live performance didn't quite cut it for the audience. The band stood there looking rather bored and disinterested, and the audience quickly followed suit. I like to look around at the effect the performers make on the audience, tells me what other people think. A band should communicate to their audience. One of the basic principles of performance. Vekstar didn't.Their performance: poor, boring; Musicianship: Decent; Vocals: lacking energy live, (sound better on My Space); Creativity: poor, after a while it sounded like one long song. Audience rapport: none, people were talking to each other and not many were watching the band as they played. Final analysis. Time to go back to the drawing board. Regroup. Something is not working here.Second up: Dead Sara (Can hear them on my space if you are interested.) What can I say. Dead SaraRocks! The lackluster bored audience became very intent and heads began boppin' as soon as Dead Sara took the stage. Dead Sara immediately got the audience's attention and kept it for their whole set. They opened up with a two song two member (reminiscent of the White Stripes) set, and finished with three more songs with a guest bassist and drummer (Their My Space page says bassist and drummer needed). Performance, great! Nothing too fancy but these girls (Emily and Siouxsie) rock, are alive, and love music. It shows; Musicianship, great. Siouxsie rocks on both guitar and drums. Vocals: Excellent! Best vocals of the night. Great voice and man can that Emily scream! Creativity: Tops! Good mixture of songs and styles. Nothing boring, and they did different songs than they have on My Space. (Except for Innuendo which they played live). Audience rapport. Great! They were totally in sync with the crowd and afterwards I heard good comments coming out of everyone's mouths. Final Analysis: Keep your eyes on these girls. They are going places. Third up: BILLY BOY on POISON. (Sorry guys can't find My Space profile on you). Interesting act. Probably a little on the bizarre side (lead singer in underwear and fishnet stocking type of bizarre), but interesting. Had a good size following there and like Dead Sara had the audience with them throughout their set. A good performance oriented act, with strong rockin' music, but a little weak (well actually a lot weak) on the vocals. Performance: Great! (if you like things a little bizarre) Just plain bizarre if you don't like bizarre. Nonetheless, still a well coordinated stage show. Musicianship: Great! A very tight band, Rockin'music. Vocals: Terrible. Sorry but someone needs a few vocal lessons. Creativity: Decent mixture of songs and styles. Got a little boring after awhile (probably due to the singing more than anything else.) Audience rapport. Great. Seemed to have lots of fans there, and they liked them. Though, a lot of the non fans didn't have very many kind things to say. Final Analysis. Worth seeing to decide for yourself. If they are your kind of band, you'll probably like them. If they are not, you won't. As for me, not exactly my kind of band. I like good vocals. So I got a little bored and walked out before Billy Boy on Poison finished. Didn't stay for the other bands.(c)2007 Ron Powers

Brief History of London and West End Theatre

Shoreditch was the venue for Londons first playhouse way back in 1576 and with name of The Theatre, the start of a magical history of London and West End Theatre was born. Before The Theatre at Shoreditch plays and actments were performed at random venues such as private homes, courtyards and inn yards all across London. In 1597 and after the lease had run out the owner of The Theatre, Richard Burbage decided to up sticks and move the timbers across the river Thames to build the first (of an industrious three) Globe Theatres to the South Bank. The famous Globe opened to the public in 1599 with Burbage pioneering the way with his own performance company. (Burbage was to instantly to propel himself as the first of Londons great actor and impressios. He also honours the famous claim to be the very first man to play the role of Hamlet, King Lear and Othello).It was not until 1663 that the first London West End venue was opened, when the very first of many was built in Drury Lane. This famous old theatre hosted the earliest West End stars such as Charles Hart and Nell Gwyn until tragically, it was destroyed by fire in 1672. With new found hunger for Theatres it was not long before the residents of London had a new theatre to shout about. A second theatre called the Theatre Royal of Drury Lane was designed by the famous Christopher Wren and opened on the same site in 1674. The Royal survived for 120 years which was along time in those days and along with other theatres that were built in the same locality such as Theatre Royal Covent Garden (known as the the Royal Opera House) and the Haymarket the West end theatres of London were evolved.David Garrick was the legendary manager of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He arrived in London in 1737 as a wine seller but was soon to be mesmerised by the attraction of theatre. In 1741 he played the famous role of Shakespeares Richard III and over the next 20-30 years he had a massive impact on London theatre. His work is remembered today through the Garrick Club and the Garrick Theatre. The modern theatre scene in the West End was largely influenced in the 19th century when many of the beautiful theatre buildings that are still around today were built and all of a sudden theatre going was the latest fashion trend of the middle and upper classes in London. Shaftesbury Avenue was created towards the end of 19th century and many theatres were soon built on this focal point for London theatre.Today London West End theatre is thriving and many stars of TV and film are now resorting to high profile roles in London and New York theatres. In 2008 the 21st century is set to receive its first new West End theatre when the Sondheim Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue is to open, being the first venue there since 1931.

Notes are the musical notation representing a fixed pitch. While the word strictly refers to the physical notation of a pitch, it's more commonly used to refer to both the pitch and the notation.Notes are named after the first seven letters in the alphabet -- A, B, C, D, E, F, and G -- and keep the same letter value as they are repeated up or down the keyboard or other musical instrument.But since there are twelve notes in a diatonic scale, the seven notes can be altered. The type of welding you will use depends on many factors. The important thing is for the weld to be amazingly strong. Factors to consider include the amount of heat needed to get the materials hot enough, the design of the material, and the design of the joint. It is important to test the strength of the weld. Not all metals hold a weld very well. Steel and sheet metal work best. Since you will be working with heat and often with metals that have sharp edges, it is very important that you wear heavy gloves and eye protection when you are welding. You should also wear long sleeved clothing to prevent burns. You should only use welding equipment after being properly trained in how to operate it. Metalwork is the art of making various objects out of metal. Most metalworkers are also called machinists. They make pieces of structures or machine parts also called metalworking. This is quite a complicated job that requires patience, precision, and some concrete math skills in geometry. Luckily most machine shops have computers that will do most of the calculations for you. There are many types of skills a metalworker needs to have to be able to design all of the various structures and machine parts needed. Milling is the process of removing the unneeded edges of a piece. Turning involves using a lathe that spins; the metalworker gets to shape the metal as it spins. Cutting involves using various tools depending on the cut you want and the type of metal you are working with. Drilling is the process of creating holes in the various machine parts. Grinding will help remove sharp edges giving the machine piece a smooth finish. Depending on the reason why you are creating the metalwork, it may be necessary to use casting methods. Welding is commonly in metal working as well. This is a trade that requires you to have various skills with tools and knowledge of how those tools can be used on various types of metals. It is important to be safe doing metalwork as well. The metal used is often scrap metal that was discarded so wear gloves to protect against sharp edges. Make sure you know how to properly use the metalworking tools. You should always wear eye protection to prevent getting pieces of metal in your eyes. Metalworking fluids should only be used in a well ventilated area with gloves to prevent a reaction to your skin. Stop working with metalwork fluids if you develop bronchitis, asthma, or respiratory problems. To prevent them, consider wearing a respiratory mask.

Auditioning For A Musical For The Uninitiated

Preparing to audition for a part in a musical is daunting at best and petrifying at worst for those whose lives have not revolved around singing since early childhood. Some people just know music from having grown up around it. They seem to breathe it and it oozes out their pores. They know every song from every musical, even the obscure ones. At the least provocation they will start to belt out a song so appropriate to the moment that it's scary, and on key too, hitting every single note. And they don't seem to freeze up in the face of their audience either. While singing, they're in their element.Not everyone is blessed with such a natural command of the audio waves, or with such finely tuned vocal cords. Nor is everyone able to act natural and at ease in front of an audience while singing.There's no question that it's fun to participate in a play, and many people are willing to have a smaller role in a community theater production. Many can shine in such a situation. But what about when the only production your school or local theater is planning is a musical, and you know your singing voice is less than angelic?Perhaps you enjoy lifting up your voice in singing, but others ask you politely (or not so politely) to refrain from joining in so as not to ruin the song. Maybe even you as well as everyone else can hear your voice crack or warble on many of the notes. And yet, you really want to be in the musical, and you don't want to just do tech once again this year.Here are some tips for how to handle this worrisome event.Tip #1: Read the script. Know what the musical is about and know the characters. Choose a character to audition for that you are well suited to. The character should have your body type and (obviously) your gender. If you're a large, hairy older male, don't audition for the part of a slim, innocent teenage maiden.Tip #2: Choosing your music. Choosing the right music to sing for the audition is of utmost importance. Usually, you don't sing a song for the audition that is from the musical. Chose another piece of music. Choose one that is in your voice range, without too many high or low notes. You can choose any song, however, songs from other musicals often provide you with a platform to showcase your strong points. You can usually show a lot of expression and movement with them, and this will show your abilities even if your voice cracks. Songs from musicals are likeable and you can usually find the music for them.Tip #3: When to start. Don't wait to start preparing for the audition. Searching for the right music can be very time consuming. Sometimes the most important criteria for your choice is not how much you like the song, but whether the music is available!Tip #4: Finding music for your song. Usually the casting director requires you to bring the music without lyrics on a CD or audiotape or the sheet music for piano. You can buy sheet music online, but you can also get it at a music store or in the music library of a local school. Many songs are available online for free as midi files, although the quality is not necessarily the best. Often you will only have 30-60 seconds to sing, so you can usually find just a portion of the music online, enough for one or two verses and one chorus. Download it, save it and burn it to CD or hook up your computer to your audiotape player and copy it to an audiotape.Tip #5: Practice, practice, practice. There is no such thing as too much practice. Be sure you have the words memorized so that you never wonder what the next word is. Sing the song everywhere you go when you're alone. Belt it out in the shower. Sing in the car. Practice with the music until you have it perfect to the note. Practice your hand movements, facial expressions and actions too until they have become ingrained and you don't have to think about them. Let the actions follow the words. Use your whole body to sing and sing from your belly, not from your throat.Tip #6: Consider getting a voice coach. If you're not a singer, this is a very good idea. A voice coach will help you improve your singing and your presentation considerably, and they will give you confidence.Tip #7: Get a good night's sleep. Go in to the audition rested, not frazzled and worried. Show your best side. Wear appropriate clothing.Tip #8: Warm up your vocal cords. Before you sing your song at the audition, do all your usual voice warm-ups and more. Warm up your body, too, with stretching and movement.Tip #9: Dealing with fear. Everybody is scared at an audition. Everybody really wants to get a part; so freezing up is not unusual. The casting director is aware of this. The very best thing you can do is to relax and allow spontaneity in your performance. Show your best side. Show your expressiveness and acting ability even when you know you've missed a note. And don't sing quietly. Stage singers need to make their voices reach the farthest corner of the auditorium.Tip #10: The actual audition. When you perform your song, forget all your practicing. Just be spontaneous. You know the material very well - now just have fun with it. If you make a mistake, just go right on. (Don't stop in the middle and say "Oops" or "Sorry." Be energetic. The casting director wants to see how well you can act as well as how well you can sing. Keep smiling. If you miss a note, or if your voice won't obey what your mind tells it to do, just keep going and don't look like you think you've made a mistake. And when you're done, give a little bow and walk off the stage with confidence.Good luck! With a smile and a song in your heart, you'll do well!

In todays rapidly changing world, we need visionaries. Visionary mothers, visionary educators, visionary leaders, visionary children--visionaries, period!Many think of visionaries being those who have a special "gift" for thinking big, thinking creatively, etc. But consider that a visionary is simply someone who chooses to walk his or her own heroic path in life, inspired by his or her own vision. Most people do not choose the visionary path.Many people focus on achieving "success", "financial freedom" etc.; however this is easy to do without living a visionary life.Many people also focus on "making a difference", "leaving a legacy", and "doing my small part" to "change the world"; yet this is easily done without living a visionary life.Further, people focus on attaining "salvation", "enlightenment" or "transformation". Once again, pursuing these objectives is quite easily done without living a visionary life.You can live a visionary life while pursuing any of the above objectives, however most people dare not tread in the realm where the visionary lives. The visionary life is anything but "easy". Indeed, it is a road less traveled.What we tend to do in life is seek noble goals, values and ideals, while staying safely within the realm of our psychological/intellectual position. We could say this is living a "positionary life". Or living beneath the level of vision.If this is so for you, then you'd be content with actions and solutions that compromise your highest values and ideals, and your path of conscious/spiritual/intellectual growth/evolution. You might not act like you like such actions and solutions, but you'd tolerate those actions in your life, as if there is no other practical alternative.Thus, in various areas of your life you'd see 1) a great disparity between what you say you value and how you act, OR 2) that you've come to accept very low values, dreams and ideals OR 3) that you are not consciously evolving both your values and your actions to higher levels as you could be (more about this later).Here is the kicker. Living beneath the level of vision, one can often not even see much evidence for 1, 2 or 3 above (Unbridled self-honesty is more accessible and prevalent at the level of vision). Thus we cannot see how much we cannot see, and so we think there's not much that we don't see.Look around at the world today, and what do we see? People who are perfectly content with compromise solutions, as if we as human beings are not capable of rising to new levels where compromise is not necessary. As evidence of positionary thinking, I'd point to the acceptance of compromise as a valid, worthwhile and even noble approach in life, in marriage, in international relations, in politics, in business, etc.Visionaries in general do not espouse compromise. Visionaries face what few do. Visionaries are more like warriors than dreamers, in that they walk the path, they face what there is to face, and as a result a vision that others cannot see emerges. In the same way that the man who does not climb the mountain cannot see what's on the other side, those who do not walk a visionary path cannot see what the visionary can.There is conversation in conscious communities about forming a campaign to recruit and train one million of today's most conscious change agents in how to stand for all of humanity and lead the kind of visionary life that creates a world that works for everyone. It's called the One Million Visionaries Campaign.This initiative would bring the most advanced methods to those most ready to usher in a new era of consciousness for humanity. Those who are creating our future must have access to deeper levels of courage, compassion and vision--and the skills to inspire even their adversaries to stand with them.Such initiatives and visionaries are what the world needs now. There was an interesting post today on a message board that I go to. It was about a guy that just started a new band and he wanted to know if anyone could give him some songwriting tips.First off, there isn't a wrong way to write songs. But after you've done it for a while, you'll find out that some ways to go about it are easier than others.This is how I do it.1. Music and Melody Come FirstI never fit a melody to pre-existing lyrics. It's forced and it doesn't sound good to me. When you write the words before the melody, you're trying to force the melody to fit your lyrics. The result is it doesn't sound natural.A lot of songwriters start with an idea. It's just easier for me to know what angle I'm coming from. Usually how it happens with me is the music comes first and the melody comes right after that.Why do I write the melody first before my lyrics?If I don't know how many notes are in the melody, how do I know how many syllables need to be in my lines? I don't.If there's 8 notes in the first part of the melody and 6 notes in the second part , you'll have to have 8 syllables in the first line and 6 in the second.Let's say you want to put 4 lines in each of your verses, You'll have 8 syllables in the first and third lines and six in the second and fourth.Here's an example:In the song 'I want you to want me' the lead singer for Cheap Trick wrote a four line melody that had six notes in the first three lines and seven in the last line. He knew that there had to be six syllables in the first three lines and seven syllables in the fourth.I Want You To Want MeI want you to want me =six syllablesI need you to need me =six syllablesI'd love you to love me =six syllablesI'm begging you to beg me =seven syllables2. Figure Out An Idea To Work FromIdeas are everywhere. You can write about what a friend of yours is going through. You can write about what you're going through.I keep a journal just for this and make daily installments. I write down everything that I can think of that happened that day. And after a few months of that, I'll go through the journal harvest my ideas.I treat my journal like the garden it is. Most every song I write comes directly from my journals.3. Put the idea into one to two sentencesThe best way to show you this is to give you an example. Keeping with 'I Want You To Want Me', heres the basic idea:'I want you to want me as bad as I want you.'You only want one idea for each song. If you have any more, your song is going to last too long. And you're listeners won't be able to keep up.Believe me, nobody but you will understand them. I know from very bad experience.4. Write The Lyrics To Fit The MelodyOnce you have the idea, you start to explain the idea in the verses with the number of syllables you have in the melody. The chorus is just the overall idea in a summed up fashion.That's how I write songs. Music and melody come first. The idea comes after that. Write the idea in a statement form. And then, write the lyrics to fit the melody.

When your band plays a song, do you play that song the same way every time? If not, you should. Here's why... It can all be summed up into one word called "predictability." So many drummers will never play a song the same way twice. This, many times, throws the other musicians off, potentially causing a drag in timing or increasing the chances of a mislead cue. As the drummer in a band it is your responsibility to provide the foundation for the music. This meaning that everything you do behind the drum kit is vital. Anything you do out of the ordinary, or something the other musicians are not used to hearing you play in a particular song really has the potential to screw things up. Experimenting is definitely a good thing, and that's why we practice, but there just comes a time when experimenting is over. You must decide what you're gonna do and then stick to it. Never throw in something that the other musicians are not expecting or you can end up with some serious chaos. Predictability is a must! The other musicians must know what you're going to do before you do it. An outstanding drummer is predictable! Never slack, sloppy, or impulsive. An outstanding drummer is also prepared and organized, ready to bring his or her goods to the table. Now, what does being prepared and organized entail?When you go to your regular band practice sessions, are you ready? Did you do your homework from the previous band practice? If so, do you have it nailed? Do you know exactly what you want to accomplish this time around? Now, what does being prepared and organized for your next band practice session include? Do you have your tape recorder, note pad, pen, questions for the other band members written down, and did you bring everything you were supposed to bring? It has always bugged me terribly when a band mate would come to play and he or she would just not be prepared. Situations like that are just not fair to everyone else who is prepared. It's been said that when preparedness and opportunity meet, success occurs. I don't know what kind of "success" your hoping for, but one thing is for sure, you will more likely meet with it by being organized when opportunity knocks.

Proper piano instruction is an element extremely vital to learning the instrument well. To be tied to the written music is a shame, when learning chords and music theory adds so much to the value of piano instruction.Given a healthy dose of music theory and chord instruction mixed in, all of the other elements of piano instruction eventually begin to work hand in hand. Piano instruction then becomes an intricate web of gaining bits of detailed knowledge little by little and understanding the music that's being played without fully realizing that it's being gained.Playing the piano then becomes more fun and a joyful event that can be shared with full understanding of the music theory and form and chord structure that lies behind each song.

Transposition and Modulation: How To Transpose To a Different Key & Modulate Between Keys

How do transposition and modulation relate? Are they the same? Let's take a look at both of them and see what makes them tick.I am sure that you have had the experience sometime in your piano-playing life when someone asks you to play a song -- but in a different key than in which it is written. It might be a singer wanting you to lower the song a step so he/she doesn't screech. It might be a song leader wanting you to play a song in a more comfortable keys for a congregation or group. It might be a trumpet player looking over your shoulder and wanting to play along with you -- but when he/she plays the same note you are playing, it sure doesn't sound the same!So....it's your job, as pianist, to get that song moved to a different key. That's transposition -- playing or writing a song in a different key than in which it was originally written.Modulation is similar but different -- modulation means the process of getting from the old key to the new key. In other words, if I'm playing in the key of C, and then want to play in the key of Eb, I have to learn to modulate -- move smoothly from one key to another without being too abrupt and jarring.There are basically 3 ways to transpose:1. by intervals2. by scale degrees3. by solfege -- the moveable "do" system.But since solfege applies mostly to singers, we will ignore that possibility and just take up the first two:1. Intervals: If the new key is an interval of a minor 3rd above the old key, then all notes in the song will also be an interval of a minor 3rd higher. In other words, if you are transposing from the key of C to the key of Eb, which is a minor 3rd higher (or major 6th lower -- whichever way you want to look at it), then all melody notes will also be a minor 3rd higher:"G" in the key of C would become "Bb" in the key of Eb. "E" in the key of C would become ":G" in the new key of Eb. "A" would become "C", "B" would become "D", and so on. All chords would also move a minor 3rd higher. The "C chord" would become the "Eb chord", the "F chord" would become the "Ab chord", and so on.2. Scale degrees: Each key you play in has it's own scale degrees. In the key of C the scale degrees are: C=1, D=2, E=3, F=4, G=5, A=6, B=7, C=8. In the key of Eb, however, Eb=1, F=2, G=3, Ab=4, Bb=5, C=6, D=7, Eb=8. So if I want to transpose Silent Night, for example, from the key of C to the key of Eb, I need to notice what scale degrees I am using in the key of C, and then use those same scale degrees in the key of Eb. For example, Silent Night starts on the 5th degree of the scale, goes up to the 6th, back to the 5th, then down to the 3rd. In the key of C that is: G-A-G-E. But in the key of Eb it is Bb-C-Bb-G. Why? Because the scale degrees 5-6-5-3 are constant -- we just need to apply them in each key. What about chords? Same idea. If the chord progression on Silent Night is the I chord followed by the V chord, followed by the I chord, followed by the IV chord, etc. -- then in the key of C that means C-G-C-F-etc., but in the key of Eb it means Eb-Bb-Eb-Ab-etc.Modulation means getting between keys, so let's say you are playing in the key of C, but you want to get to the key of Eb smoothly, without jarring the nerves of the listeners. There are lots of ways to do it, but the main point is that you have to get to the V7 chord of the new key. So from the key of C to the key of Eb, that means getting to Bb7. How do we do that smoothly? We look for chords with common notes. Since the V of the V of the new key would be Fm7, we have C as a common note. So we hold the C in the C chord, and move the rest of the C chord to Fm7, then Bb7, then Eb, and presto -- we are there!Hope this has helped you understand both the process and the difference between transposing and modulating. Just remember this: Transposition means to play a song in a different key, while modulation is the process of getting from key to key.

With a guitar you have many easy nice sounding chords at your disposal. Let's play a few open guitar chords in the key of A.Guitar tabGuitar tab notation is a way of showing how to play melodies and chords on the guitar. It usually consists of six lines representing the six strings on the guitar and numbers that indicate the frets to play.In this guitar lesson we will use a form of guitar tablature that uses numbers instead of a tablature staff. I have found that ordinary guitar tab staff notation sometimes will be displayed uncorrectly on article sites.How to read this notationI will use two numbers to show how to play the notes. The first number indicate the fret and the second the string to play. An example:3/2This tab notation tells you to play the third fret on the second string. It is the note D on your guitar. For clarification: The first string is the string with the highest pitch.A turnaround in the key of AWhat is a turnaround? It is a set of chords that can be played over and over again on your guitar as an intro to a song or between verses and so on.We will start with an ordinary A major chord that with the guitar tab notation previously explained will look like this:0/5 2/4 2/3 2/2 0/1We will omit the sixth string to get a cleaner sound. Let's add an E chord. We will not use the ordinary E major och E7 chord. Instead we will use an easier chord that is called E major with A as bass note notated E/A.The guitar chord looks like this:0/5 2/4 1/3 0/2 0/1We will finally add an Asus chord. The guitar tab notation looks as follows:0/5 2/4 2/3 3/2 0/1You can play the chords in the following manner:A E/A Asus AYou can strum the chords with two or four downstrokes on each chord. As I mentioned before this chord progression works as a turnaround and can be played over and over again.A turnaround in the key of A minorWe will start this turnaround with the plain and easy A minor chord. It looks like this with guitar tab:0/5 2/4 2/3 1/2 0/1If you release the finger pressure a bit and slide the chord up two frets you will get the following chord:0/5 4/4 4/3 3/2 0/1A nice sounding chord that can be named in different ways. We can call it B minor with A as bass note and an added E note. Abbreviated it will be Bm/A add 11.By sliding the chord up one more fret and changing just one note (by pressing down your little finger) you will get the following guitar chord:0/5 5/4 5/3 5/2 0/1This will be an A minor seven chord. The short notation is Am7.Played in the following order the chords will create a turnaround:Am Bm/A add 11 Am7 Bm/A add 11These two turnarounds are easy contributions to your guitar repertoire and can be changed and developed as you like.
